Together with the artists supported by basis, we’re opening our doors and inviting you to discover current works, look back on the past 20 years, and explore new perspectives. During open studios, talks, and guided tours, you’ll have the chance to meet artists, learn more about their working processes, and discover the various projects at basis.

EN) From August 28 to September 6, 2026, the Köthener Bachfesttage invites you to a grand celebration of community. For over a week, guests from near and far will gather in the Bach city of Köthen (Anhalt) to celebrate Johann Sebastian Bach and his music. Around 40 events across diverse formats will showcase that every voice counts—in music as in life. Artistic Director Folkert Uhde has deliberately placed togetherness at the heart of this year’s edition: concerts, discussion formats, installations, and participatory projects will open up fresh perspectives on Bach’s work and its contemporary relevance. International stars such as pianist Alexander (Sasha) Melnikov and cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras will join the renowned Köthener BachCollektiv featuring soprano Miriam Feuersinger. At the same time, projects deeply rooted in the local community will shape the festival—above all Sing Bach!, where 200 Köthen elementary school children take the stage alongside professional musicians. Ticket pre-sales have begun!

The opening concert on September 2 at the Church of St. Agnus introduces the festival's theme programmatically: under the title Über die Gemeinschaft (On Community), Miriam Feuersinger and the Köthener BachCollektiv will perform key works by Bach, balancing solo virtuosity and collective sonic expression. Today, the ensemble is counted among the world’s leading groups for historically informed Bach interpretation and has shaped the festival for years.

Further highlights include a three-part cello cycle with Jean-Guihen Queyras (September 5–6), who will perform Bach's famous solo suites at authentic venues in Köthen for the first time. The Ensemble Continuum presents an innovative concert project: in Was frag ich nach der Welt? on September 4, Bach's music is woven with a composition by Caroline Shaw into a contemporary oratorio. Another thematic accent is set by Ein Fest für Paul Gerhardt on September 3, combining spoken word and 17th-century music to mark the 350th anniversary of the poet's death in 2026.

Both entertaining and insightful, Bach vs. Handel takes the stage on September 5: in a moderated concert, the two Baroque giants face off in a musical contest featuring their finest choral works. Music by Dessau-born Friedrich Wilhelm Rust can also be heard across four different concerts this year. Rust, who attended school in Köthen and was taught music by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, was a star of his era. The program is rounded out by numerous short concerts, late-night formats, and experimental projects, including installations and performances in unusual spaces throughout Köthen Castle. A defining hallmark of the Köthener Bachfesttage remains the close connection between international artists and the local region. Formats such as Sing Bach! (August 28) and Bach bewegt! (September 5–6) invite active participation, making the festival an open experience for all generations. Free events and live broadcasts in the castle park also contribute to the uniquely warm, family-friendly atmosphere.

Johann Sebastian Bach, who served as court music director (Hofkapellmeister) in Köthen from 1717 to 1723, experienced one of the most productive creative periods of his life here. The Bachfesttage builds upon this historic setting while bringing today’s musical world to Köthen. Historically informed performance at the highest level meets experimental approaches and new concert formats. The Köthener Bachfesttage stands for immediate concert experiences, short distances, and personal encounters—a festival that brings the idea of community to life through music.

Über eine Woche lang kommen Gäste aus nah und fern in der Bachstadt Köthen (Anhalt) zusammen, um Johann Sebastian Bach und seine Musik zu feiern. Rund 40 Veranstaltungen zeigen in vielfältigen Formaten, dass jede Stimme zählt – in der Musik wie im Leben. Intendant Folkert Uhde stellt das Miteinander bewusst ins Zentrum der diesjährigen Ausgabe: Konzerte, Gesprächsformate, Installationen und partizipative Projekte eröffnen neue Perspektiven auf Bachs Werk und seine Aktualität. Internationale Stars wie der Pianist Alexander (Sasha) Melnikov und der Cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras treffen auf das renommierte Köthener BachCollektiv mit der Sopranistin Miriam Feuersinger. Zugleich prägen Projekte mit starker lokaler Verankerung das Festival – allen voran Sing Bach!, bei dem 200 Köthener Grundschulkinder gemeinsam mit professionellen Musiker:innen auf der Bühne stehen. Der Kartenvorverkauf ist gestartet!

Das Eröffnungskonzert am 2. September in der Kirche St. Agnus stellt das Festivalthema programmatisch vor: Unter dem Titel Über die Gemeinschaft musizieren Miriam Feuersinger und das Köthener BachCollektiv zentrale Werke Bachs zwischen solistischer Virtuosität und kollektiver Klangentfaltung. Das Ensemble zählt heute zu den international führenden Klangkörpern für historisch informierte Bach-Interpretationen und prägt das Festival seit Jahren entscheidend. 

Zu den weiteren Höhepunkten gehört der dreiteilige Cello-Zyklus mit Jean-Guihen Queyras (5. und 6. September), der erstmals in Köthen die berühmten Solosuiten Bachs an authentischen Orten aufführt. Mit dem Ensemble Continuum steht zudem ein innovatives Konzertprojekt auf dem Programm: In Was frag ich nach der Welt? am 4. September wird Bachs Musik mit einer Komposition von Caroline Shaw zu einem zeitgenössischen Oratorium verwoben. Einen weiteren inhaltlichen Akzent setzt Ein Fest für Paul Gerhardt am 3. September, das Spoken Word und Musik des 17. Jahrhunderts verbindet. 2026 jährt sich sein Todestag zum 350. Mal.

Unterhaltsam und zugleich kenntnisreich geht es am 5. September bei Bach vs. Händel zu: In einem moderierten Konzert treten die beiden Barockgrößen in einen musikalischen Wettstreit um die schönsten Chorwerke. In gleich vier Konzerten ist in diesem Jahr außerdem Musik des Dessauer Musikers Friedrich Wilhelm Rust zu hören. Rust, in Köthen zur Schule gegangen und von Wilhelm Friedemann Bach in der Musik unterrichtet, war zu seiner Zeit ein Star. Ergänzt wird das Programm durch zahlreiche Kurzkonzerte, Nachtformate und experimentelle Projekte, darunter Installationen und Performances in ungewöhnlichen Räumen des Köthener Schlosses. Ein wesentliches Merkmal der Köthener Bachfesttage bleibt die enge Verbindung von internationalen Künstler:innen mit der Region. Formate wie Sing Bach! (28. August) oder Bach bewegt! (5. und 6. September) laden zur aktiven Teilnahme ein und machen das Festival zu einem offenen Erlebnis für alle Generationen. Auch kostenlose Veranstaltungen und Live-Übertragungen im Schlosspark tragen zur besonderen, familiären Atmosphäre bei.

Johann Sebastian Bach, der von 1717 bis 1723 als Hofkapellmeister in Köthen wirkte, erlebte hier eine seiner produktivsten Schaffensphasen. An diesen historischen Ort knüpfen die Bachfesttage an und bringen zugleich die musikalische Welt von heute nach Köthen. Historische Aufführungspraxis auf höchstem Niveau verbindet sich mit experimentellen Ansätzen und neuen Konzertformaten. Die Köthener Bachfesttage stehen für unmittelbare Konzerterlebnisse, kurze Wege und persönliche Begegnungen – ein Festival, das die Idee der Gemeinschaft in der Musik lebendig werden lässt.

On August 23, doors open at 3:00 p.m., offering visitors a firsthand look at the work of the current fellows at Schloss Wiepersdorf.

Author Susanne Schädlich will present her story "Teufelskreis" from the short story collection Der Westen: eine ostdeutsche Empfindung (2026). In conversation with the book's editor, Cornelia Geißler, she will discuss East-West German sentiments, memories, as well as observations and explore whether the labels "East" and "West" have become mere codes for an outdated culture war.

British-German artist Taslima Ahmed will hold an artist talk about her creative process and painting exclusively through technological means. For her series "Non-Analogue Paintings," she repurposed an industrial printer to build up layers that mimic painterly textures, impasto, and thick brushstrokes. This segment will be complemented by a lecture on art and artificial intelligence by media artist Manuel Gnam.

South Korean installation and performance artist Hyunju Oh will perform her piece Pain, unspecified (2019). In this solo performance, she utilizes the specific properties of various materials to create a metaphor for pain that defies specification.

Visitors can also look forward to additional presentations by fellows from the fields of visual art, humanities and social sciences, as well as literature. As every Sunday, the museum and the café in the Orangerie will already open at 1:00 p.m.

Fellowships granted to 63 artists and scientists from 25 countries

Akademie Schloss Solitude is pleased to announce the names of the 63 fellows selected by an international jury for the 2026–2028 fellowship period.

Application Process

For the first time, the selection process for the twentieth Solitude fellowship generation was conducted in two stages. This change was introduced in response to the exceptionally high number of applications received in previous open calls.

During the first stage—the preliminary application — 4,700 artists and researchers applied for a fellowship at Akademie Schloss Solitude. Applicants submitted basic information about themselves, their artistic or professional practice, and their motivation through an online application form.

In disciplines with particularly high numbers of applications, an anonymized lottery was conducted after the first stage to ensure an equal opportunity pre-selection for the second stage. The selected applicants were then invited to submit a complete application, including work samples, within a specified deadline. A total of 2,091 complete applications were received for this second stage.

Germany accounted for by far the largest group of applicants, followed by the United States, India, and the United Kingdom. Other countries with particularly strong representation included Iran and Nigeria, reflecting significant participation from both Europe and the Global South.

Selection Process & Jury

The international jury comprised 14 distinguished members. Following a multi-day selection process, the jury reviewed the 2,091 complete applications submitted in the second stage and, in accordance with the Akademie Schloss Solitude’s selection guidelines, chose a total of 63 artists and researchers from 25 countries, including seven collectives consisting of two members each.

This selection process determines the recipients of the Akademie Schloss Solitude Fellowship through the end of 2028.

Selected Fellows

The 63 selected fellows come from 25 countries. The largest groups are from Germany (16) and the United States (15), followed by the United Kingdom with four and China with three fellows. Two fellows each come from Australia, Colombia, India, and Iran, while all other countries are represented by one fellow each. As is typical for internationally active artists and researchers, many of the selected fellows no longer live in the country where they were born or raised.

The first fellows of the new generation will arrive in October 2026. Additional arrival dates are scheduled for January, April, and October 2027, as well as January and April 2028.

Alte Schmelze is pleased to present Shadows of Pressure, a solo exhibition by Frankfurt-based artist Hyunju Oh. In this exhibition, where audio drama installation, performance, and drawing are organically interwoven, the emotions that Oh has long explored—such as pain, anxiety, and trauma—are sensually transformed within the space.

The starting point of her work lies in personal stories and experiences, through which she examines how memories and trauma are carried forward and transformed from generation to generation. The artist navigates the space between absence and presence through sound, utilizing a structure where language, voice, and audio play a central role.

DE) Die empirischen Erzählungen manifestieren sich durch Stimmen und Landschaften, Licht und Dunkelheit, Träume und Traumata.

Die Alte Schmelze präsentiert die Einzelausstellung „Shadows of Pressure“ von Hyunju Oh, einer in Frankfurt am Main ansässigen Künstlerin. In dieser Ausstellung, in der Audio-Drama-Installation, Performance sowie Zeichnungen organisch miteinander verwoben sind, werden die von Oh langjährig künstlerisch untersuchten Emotionen wie Schmerz, Angst und Trauma sinnlich im Raum transformiert. Ausgangspunkt der künstlerischen Arbeit sind persönliche Geschichten und Erlebnisse, anhand derer unter anderem die Frage untersucht werden, wie sich Erinnerungen und Trauma von Generation zu Generation fortschreiben und transformieren. Die Künstlerin bewegt sich zwischen Abwesenheit und Präsenz mittels Klang, insbesondere durch eine Dramaturgie, in der Sprache, Stimme und Sound eine zentrale Rolle einnehmen.

EN) For three days in June, the exhibition spaces of basis will be transformed into a place of community. A multi-layered interplay of instrumental sounds, electronic music, a chill-out lounge, and shared readings. The installation Commune is a space for collective sonic experience—a musical co-existence between Frankfurt artists and the Danish ensemble Scenatet.

Ein vielschichtiges Zusammenspiel aus Instrumentalklängen, elektronischer Musik, Chill-Out Lounge und gemeinsamen Lesungen. EN) The Kulturstiftung Schloss Wiepersdorf is an organization that promotes art, culture and science through an interdisciplinary and international residency programme.

It awards scholarships to individual artists and scientists as well as to groups from the cultural and academic fields. It organizes programmes with scholarship holders, guests and partners, for in-house experts and with and at partner organizations.

At the same time, it commemorates the history of the house with a current focus through exhibitions and programs on the epoch and mindset of Romanticism and German-German history.

The Kulturstiftung Schloss Wiepersdorf sees itself as part of Brandenburg’s cultural landscape and aims to strengthen democratic civil society structures through debate, engagement and communication.

DE) Die Kulturstiftung Schloss Wiepersdorf ist eine Organisation zur Pflege von Kunst, Kultur und Wissenschaft durch ein interdisziplinäres und internationales Residenzprogramm.

Sie vergibt Stipendien an einzelne Künstler:innen und Wissenschaftler:innen sowie an Gruppen aus dem kulturellen und akademischen Bereich. Sie veranstaltet Programme mit Stipendiat:innen, Gästen und Partner:innen, für Expert:innen im Haus sowie mit und bei Partnerorganisationen.

EN) Stressful situations such as states of compulsion and anxiety lead to repetition and intense inner movements. In the performance Verbogen, Verborgen, these impulses are reflected upon and physically intensified: emotions and sounds arise spontaneously from the actions themselves—not as a staged dramaturgy, but as immediate reactions of the body.

The solo performance consists of seven consecutive actions involving everyday gestures and various objects. Through repetition, mutation, and escalation of sounds and movements, no linear narrative emerges. Instead, a fragmented structure of impressions unfolds—a temporal continuum interrupted by unpredictable bodily reactions.

DE) Stresssituationen wie Zwangs- und Angstzustände führen zu Wiederholungen und intensiven inneren Bewegungen. In der Performance Verbogen, Verborgen werden diese Impulse reflek- tiert und körperlich zugespitzt: Emotionen und Laute entstehen spontan aus dem Handeln selbst – nicht als gespielte Dramaturgie, sondern als unmittelbare Reaktionen des Körpers.

Die Soloperformance besteht aus sieben aufeinanderfolgen- den Aktionen mit alltägliche Handlungen und verschiedenen Objekten. Durch Wiederholung, Mutation und Eskalation von Klängen und Bewegungen entsteht keine lineare Erzählung, viel- mehr ein fragmentares Gefüge aus Eindrücken – ein zeitliches Kontinuum, das von unvorhersehbaren körperlichen Reaktionen durchbrochen wird.

KR) 강박과 불안 상태 같은 스트레스 상황은 반복과 강렬한 내적 움직임을 만들어낸다. 퍼포먼스 Verbogen, Verborgen에서는 이러한 충동들이 성찰되고, 신체적으로 더욱 날카롭게 응축된다. 그에 따른 감정과 소리는 연출된 드라마투르기가 아닌, 행위 자체에서 즉각적으로 발생하는 몸의 반응으로서 자발적으로 나타난다.

이 솔로 퍼포먼스는 일상적인 행위와 다양한 오브제를 활용한 일곱 개의 연속된 행위로 구성된다. 소리와 움직임의 반복, 변형, 그리고 점진적인 격화 속 선형적인 서사는 형성되지 않은채, 인상들의 파편적 구조가 펼쳐지며, 예측할 수 없는 신체 반응에 의해 끊임없이 중단되는 시간적 연속체가 만들어진다.

The annual final presentation after movement, after matter by the seven international fellows of the Braunschweig Projects Programme 2025/26 will take place from 28 January to 13 February 2026 in the Montagehalle at HBK Braunschweig.

During the one-year fellowship, the artists lived and worked in the residential studios affiliated with the university in Braunschweig. For the realization of their artistic projects, they had access to the university’s workshops and received support from professors of Fine Art. In their final presentation, the fellows now present projects developed over the course of the year. The approximately 400 square meters of exhibition space in the Montagehalle provide a stage for the exceptional diversity of artistic positions, manifested both in the choice of media and in the thematic concerns of the works.

The exhibition after movement, after matter presents a dynamic group of artists whose works engage with critical reflection, trace-making, and speculation. Through diverse aesthetic and conceptual approaches, the artists respond to how history and knowledge persist in bodies and landscapes, and how power is embedded in language, politics, and infrastructures. Here, the “after” is understood as forms, sounds, actions, and gestures that endure, along with the traces, residues, and resonances they leave behind. Together, the artworks expand the imaginative possibilities of sound, image, and material, inviting visitors to explore a constellation of perspectives and creative approaches.

The international fellowship programme Braunschweig Projects is part of the artist funding initiative of the State of Lower Saxony. Since 2011, it has offered artists from around the world the opportunity to develop and realize a project at HBK Braunschweig.
