Article Title: Sound, Embodied – The Audio-Drama Installations of Hyunju Oh
Article Author: Bernd Künzig
Published in: Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, Issue 4/2025, p. 50

“The Empty Space” — this is what director Peter Brook calls his conception of the theater. It is enigmatic, visionary, expansive in thought, and yet accurate. The notion of theater as an architectural space, a proscenium stage separated from the audience, is too limited. At the same time, “the empty space” is a condensed description of theater as a place where play takes place. It is not primarily about representation or depiction, but about playing with a wide variety of means. These may include texts, bodies, movements, objects, images, and also sounds.

The exhibition and event program of the Künstler:innenhaus Lauenburg in autumn 2025 and throughout 2026 explores how we, as a society, can deal with uncertainties and challenges, what potential lies within them, and how positive visions of the future might look. A metaphorical as well as physical connection is made to water — to the Elbe River, which flows past the Künstler:innenhaus every day and shapes the place.

As an ongoing exhibition, the project “Resonances” will continue to evolve and transform at its own pace until the end of 2026. It will develop in a fluid process of change. A monthly program of events will invite visitors to encounter and dialogue.

In parallel, the Stadtgalerie will continue its series POSITION with two works by the artist Via Lewandowsky.

EN) Gagokbounce: One by One is a full-length project with text by Theresa Hak Kyung Cha that interweaves music, language, and performance. Sebastian Claren's composition combines precise formal structures with echoes of traditional Korean music, allowing the existential text to be experienced anew through sound. Hyunju Oh complements the musical layer with performative and visual signatures of memory, identity, and transformation. Together, they open up a space in which sounds, gestures, and images merge into an intense poetic experience.

Auf den Spuren Bildender Künstlerinnen

Ausstellungskatalog/Dokumentation

EN) Stressful situations, such as those involving compulsion and anxiety, lead to repetition and excessive mental activity. This pattern is cyclical but also improvised and only partially structured. In Hyunju Oh's three-day solo performance, "Verbogen, Verborgen – 7 Performances und 7 Klänge" (EN: Bent, Veiled — 7 Performances and 7 Sounds / September 26–28, 2025, Frankfurt am Main), these fleeting moments are intensified, and the physical and mental behavioral reactions are illuminated. The project consists of seven consecutive performances that use everyday actions and objects as material. Repetitions and changes in sound create a fragmented narrative within the continuum of time.

*This performance is part of the 7 Performances series, which has been staged by Hyunju Oh annually in Frankfurt am Main since 2023.

Hyunju Oh

Mutterboden

EN “Mutterboden” (Mother Soil) – a metaphor for the anchoring of life – marks a space-time continuum in which existence, time, and emotions intertwine. Hyunju Oh's thematically wide-ranging aesthetic (re)interpretations of the term “Mutterboden” negotiate an equally broad field of tension. Its contrasting poles are the humus-rich and loving cultivation of life, of the soil for the child by the mother, and – as the stark opposite – the pulling away of the soil from under the child's feet by the mother. The metaphorical and symbolic images of the “mother” and the associated associations with (our) experiences, which reveal themselves in voices and landscapes, light and darkness, dreams and traumas: “The fog was my ground. I woke up; nothing touched the tips of my toes.”

In her studio in Frankfurt am Main, artist Hyunju Oh (*1988, Daegu, South Korea) works in the fields of audio drama installation, intermedia installation, performance, video, photography, and drawing. She has participated in numerous international sound art festivals and exhibitions; solo exhibition in 2022 at the Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden.

About the book

Sound art is an intersensory experience that invites us to discover, marvel, sense, see, and hear differently. It combines the composed sounds of everyday life, nature, and the acoustic laboratory with visual object art, creating sounding sculptures and unique auditory spaces. (With All Senses: Sound Art)” by Art Book Press (Seoul) explores the world and history of sound art within the realms of contemporary art and modern music. It features interviews by Stefan Fricke and Hyunju Oh with artists Arnold Dreyblatt, Christina Kubisch, Bernhard Leitner, and Franz Martin Olbrisch, as well as musicologist and sound art expert Helga de la Motte-Haber. Additionally, Stefan Fricke contributes an essay on the origins of the term “sound art.”

Since 2011, it has offered artists from all over the world the opportunity to develop and realise a project at HBK Braunschweig. Previous scholarship holders have come from Europe and overseas, including countries like China, India, Japan, Jordan, Canada, Colombia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru and the United States of America. The programme thus enriches the university’s international orientation and network.

[Mentoring-Program] re:balance - Rudolf Augstein Stiftung

The second mentoring round has concluded. Tandems form a network.

After seven months of intensive interaction, our second mentoring round ended on April 10. To celebrate this milestone, we invited all mentors and mentees to Hamburg. We are delighted that the participants want to stay in touch and continue the cross-disciplinary exchange. It is wonderful to see that our mentoring program promotes the mentees' individual development and helps build a supportive network.

[Exhibition & Mentoring-Program] Faden im Knoten – die Runde 8

https://kunst-mentoring.de/archives/12055

Round 8 has tied up its loose ends and woven itself into the fabric of our network, establishing links with our colleagues in the process. The working phase of the mentoring round ended with an exhibition opening. "Thread in a Knot – Knot in a Thread," curated by Fedra Benoli, will be on display at the Rudolf Scharpf Gallery until April 6.

Each round gives rise to a sustainable and productive network of female artists, which takes spatial shape in Faden im Knoten. The cross-media diversity of the pieces — ranging from painting and sculpture to video art, photography, and installation — come together to form a tapestry that evokes associations. These associations evoke togetherness and reflections on the traces of encounters. The self and the other, as well as nature and one's own body, are reflected upon and deconstructed in the works, which highlight current issues in the visual arts.

The gallery's three floors become a meeting place where the participants' individual positions condense into a multi-layered thread in the knot. On behalf of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate,

State Secretary for Culture Prof. Dr. Jürgen Hardeck congratulated the participants, now no longer mentees, and thanked the mentors for their commitment.

AThe artists of the eighth round are: Samira Delzendeh and Barbara Gröbl, Isabelle Faragallah and Kerstin Mörsch, Felicia Mülbaier and Sabine Kuehnle, Hyunju Oh and Nicola Schudy, Grit Reiss and Simone Demandt, and Alina Röbke and Christine Reifenberger.

Stipendiatin Hyunju Oh  | Theresa Hak Kyung Cha

HYUNJU OH | THERESA HAK KYUNG CHA

모든 감각으로: 클랑쿤스트 Klangkunst  |  소리 · 공간 · 미디어 · 신체  |  Interviews with Arnold Dreyblatt, Christina Kubisch, Bernhard Leitner, Helga de la Motte-Haber, Franz Martin Olbrisch
